Dangerous Drugs

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PA) Drug / Pharaceutical Litigation, Dangerous Drugs Attorneys

Drugs are meant to enhance health and bring relief from ailments, but sometimes, a drug that is intended to help instead causes injury. This may occur when a drug is not properly tested, when it is prescribed to the wrong patients, or when it causes a previously unsuspected side effect.

Drug manufacturers, pharmacists, and doctors have a responsibility to ensure that the drugs they prescribe or provide for patients do not cause harm. Some drugs have dangerous side effects or have the potential to cause long-term damage. These drugs are often the subjects of later recalls. While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plays a regulatory role in determining drug safety, the manufacturer is ultimately liable for any injuries.

Borjeson & Maizel handles drug /pharmaceutical liability claims for dangerous drugs.

If you know someone, or you have suffered catastrophic injuries from taking an unsafe drug or dangerous drug contact Borjeson & Maizel immediately at our toll free hotline at 1-888-536-6638 to explore your rights. Our legal team is waiting to help you.

Some of the drugs that we are currently exploring are:

Trasylol -

Trasylol ® is a drug that was FDA approved for use in the United States in 1993 to control bleeding in patients undergoing open heart surgery and to reduce the need for blood transfusions. The drug works by blocking enzymes that dissolve blood clots.

A study published by the New England Journal of Medicine in January 2006 shows that Trasylol ® (generic name aprotinin) increases the risk of kidney failure following heart surgery by more than 2 ½ times (259%).

Many people who were given Trasylol ® do not know they received it, and medical records need to be reviewed to find out if it was administered.

The study also shows that cheaper alternatives to Trasylol ® are as effective in limiting blood loss but do not increase the risk of kidney damage.

The manufacturer of the drug, Bayer AG based in Leverkusen, Germany, and its U.S. subsidiary with offices in suburban Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, insist that the study in the New England Journal is flawed, and that the drug is safe.

The FDA calls the study a "complicated analysis based on a large observational database" and says the agency is working to gather information to evaluate Trasylol’s ® safety.

If you have had a cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, heart bypass surgery, or open heart surgery and have had renal failure or kidney failure, you may have taken Trayslol ® and did not know it. You should contact our litigation team immediately toll free at 1-888-536-6638 to discuss your rights.

Vioxx

Bextra -

Bextra® is a prescription COX-2 selective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (“NSAID”) used to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in adults and painful menstrual cycles.

Bextra® was approved for use in the United States in November 2001. In preliminary results, Bextra® was found to increase the incidence of heart attacks and strokes by 2.19 times. It is alleged that at the time of approval, the FDA were aware of some serious skin-related side effects that could occur from using the drug. Nevertheless, approval was given, and the drug was welcomed by physicians and patients throughout the country.

On April 7, 2005, the FDA requested that Pfizer suspend sales of Bextra® in the United States. The FDA based its decision, in part, on the increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes alongside reports of serious and potentially life-threatening skin reactions such as Stevens Johnsons Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Ephedra -

Ephedra® is marketed as a natural product under the name Ma Huang and is also known as Ephedrine, Pseudoephedrine, and Epitonin. It is contained in many dietary supplement products claiming to aid in weight loss, increase energy and enhance athletic performance.

In 1994, the FDA began receiving hundreds of reports of illnesses and injuries associated with the use of dietary supplements containing Ephedra® and/or ephedrine alkaloids. Incidents of deaths, strokes, heart attacks, seizures, rapid and irregular hearth rhythms, increased blood pressure, chest pain, psychosis and tremors were reported.

In December 2003, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a consumer alert and announced a ban on the sale of Ephedra® products in the United States. This alert advised consumers to immediately stop buying and using Ephedra® products because of their linkage to significant health related reactions. The Ephedra® ban became effective finally in 2004 after an FDA ruling stating that supplements containing Ephedra® and/or ephedrine alkaloids present an unreasonable risk of injury to consumers.
